Engraving can be done not only with clay, ice, marble or pottery, but also with paper and paste. It is perfect for school projects and kids will love it. Masks, bowls and fancy sculptures can be made from paper and paste or any kind of glue. Newspapers and white glue or wallpaper glue are the most popular.
To build your paper sculpture, you need a base. You can use any lightweight material with the shape of your plan; aluminum foil, cardboard model, tin can, wire mesh or inflatable balloon. The desired pattern is formed on the pedestal by applying a strip of paper that has been soaked in the glue. It can be paper paste and glue or two belts. For example, you can create a mask by laying glue-soaked paper on an inflated balloon. You can use mash to add facial features. Then puncture the balloon and remove makeup after drying.
When preparing the strip, do not cut the paper; instead, tear the newspaper off with the grain. By doing so, it produces a strip of rules. The rough edges will mesh together to form a smoother surface. Mix the white glue with an equal amount of water. A wall paste can be prepared by slowly mixing 1 part of the powder paste with 10 parts of water. To fire your paper paste, you can add 5 ml [1 teaspoon] of sodium phosphate [from your pharmacy] to 250 ml of binder. Soak the newspaper strip in the glue mixture, but not too long, as the paper will begin to break down. To make about 1 liter of paste, you need to tear four large newspapers into small pieces and soak them in 2 liters of water overnight. You can add 8 teaspoons of sodium phosphate for fire protection. The mixture was boiled for about 20 minutes the next day and then whipped with a blender until the paper was soft and pristine. The pulp is filtered and squeezed until it is in the form of a soft mass. Stir 30 ml of white glue until there are no more chunks. Use a mask like a modeling clay. The simulated tablets were allowed to dry overnight. You can also slowly heat it into the oven. It will dry faster in this way. Once dry, your work can be painted. You can waterproof it by spraying it with a clear vinyl sealant, or apply it to three or more coats.
Your child will like to create things with papier-mâché. It is very confusing but very interesting and will keep them entertained for hours.
