3/4 Chinese porcelain treasure
First broadcast: October 11, 2011.
In November 2010, Chinese vases unearthed on the peninsula of Pinner's suburbs were auctioned for £43 million, a new record for Chinese art. Why are Chinese vases so famous and so expensive? The answer lies in the European obsession with Chinese porcelain in the 16th century.
In this documentary, antique roadshow expert and Chinese ceramics expert Lars Tharp began to explore why Chinese porcelain is so precious - it is still the case. His journey to parts of China was only recently closed. Lars traveled to the mountainside. Almost every vase, plate and cup exported from China began to live in the 18th century - a mountain called Gaoling Mountain, which we used to name kaolin or china clay. He saw how porcelain clay blended with another substance that turned mica into porcelain.
