Temporary Tattoo - A long history of temporary decoration

When the first temporary tattoos debuted, it was difficult to determine accurately, but they were thought to have been designed and produced at the turn of the century. In the late 1890s and early 20th centuries, temporary tattoos of food-colored styles were inserted into the CrackerJacks® box. These temporary tattoos are transferred from the paper to the skin by using saliva or water. Surprisingly, CrackerJacks® still uses these same styles of temporary tattoos as one of their "every box of prizes" today.

Food coloring has remained the mainstay of temporary tattooing for decades. TV shows, sports teams and comics use temporary tattoos to gain recognition from young consumers. For example, Topps not only uses sports cards to sell their chewing gum, many of which are highly collectible today, but they also inserted temporary tattoos called baseball tattoos in the 1970s. Smurf, Pee Wee's Playhouse and The Bionic Women have temporary tattoo sets as a way to promote their TV shows. All of this was created using the food coloring style of tattoos.

In the 1980s, temporary tattoos were created, which were different from the ordinary food coloring style and more exotic. First, Scratch and Sniff Temporary Tattoos feature a special microfragrence® coating designed and developed by 3M. These tattoos are still based on the same artistic style as the previous edible color style and have never really caught on. However, Dandy Novelty teamed up with the world-famous tattoo artist Ole Hansen in Copenhagen in the 1980s to create a series of new temporary tattoos based on authentic tattooed artwork.

The new look of this temporary tattoo has aroused great interest and eventually got a nod from Hollywood. 3M is once again involved in creating a temporary tattoo that can be placed on a translucent film that can be transferred to the body without spitting. This allows the actor to set a tattoo for a character that looks real, but this is only temporary. The temporary tattoo style currently produced by Paper Tattoos essentially replaces the food coloring style [except for the Cracker Jack prize pack] because these designs are more avant-garde, lifelike and lasting than the previously released temporary tattoo brands. Temporary tattoos are now basically considered part of body art and are often used as fashion accessories, just as someone would choose a pair of earrings, navel rings or other body decorations.
