Guitar Plan - How to make a guitar body template from a paper plan

You just purchased a guitar plan and are ready to start making guitars. However, you do not want to cut or damage the original paper plan to build the template. What is your job?

Yes, you can easily make extra copies by going to the copy store, but some of the drawings are copyrighted and we don't want to violate these laws. This simple and traditional program for creating templates is suitable for any situation you are in.

The material you need from

 - Here's what you need to create a template. You may already have them.

  • a pair of scissors or hobby knife for cutting
  • Charcoal or pastel carbon copy
  • Masking tape
  • Track and mark with a pencil
  • Template materials such as thin cardboard or thick poster boards.
step 1 from

 - Prepare to transfer the guitar shape to the poster board. This technique is called making a CC. Take out the guitar plan and place it face down on the white surface of the table. If you can't see the line clearly, put it on a bright background. This can be on a bright table or in the shop window during the day. The key is that you clearly see the front lines when you see the back of the plan.

Step 2 from

 - Track lines. Use charcoal pencils or pastels to start tracking or marking on the guitar shape and sound hole lines. This doesn't need to be pretty or precise, just make sure it's wide and the lines you want are thick. When finished, take a thin piece of paper and gently wipe off the excess charcoal or chalk.

Step 3 from

 - Now you are ready to make your copy. Place the poster board [or cardboard] firmly on the table. Then cover it with a guitar plan with charcoal facing down and touching the poster board. Next, use the masking tape to secure the guitar plan to the poster board. Easily track guitar shapes and sound holes with a pencil. There is no need to press hard because charcoal will only shift slightly.

Step 4 from

 - When you are finished tracking the outline of the guitar, gently remove the tape and lift the plane off the poster board. Now you can see the outline on the poster board and spend a minute darkening the lines with a pencil.

Step 5 from

 - It's time to crop your template. Use a pair of scissors or a hobby knife to cut out the shape of the guitar. Take some time to cut to avoid any rough edges. Remember, this is your template and you want it to be very smooth.

Your guitar template is now complete, just repeat the process of neck, bracing, side panels and other templates.
