Over the years, I have noticed that some students have achieved excellent results very quickly, while other students have spent some time improving themselves. I initially assumed that it was only a difference in ability, I think it is rare. But after making friends with these students and understanding their history, there was a common theme: martial arts. Almost all the outstanding dancers have participated in martial arts courses. I am from the martial arts background, I saw the inner similarities between Kung Fu and Salsa. So I explored this further.
What is dance? Dance is an art form that refers to the movement of the body to music in a rhythmic manner. Dancing can be social, ritual, spiritual and expression.
What is martial arts? Martial arts is an art form that focuses on physical movement and adjustment to maximize abilities and is often associated with spiritual and ritual dedication.
Dance has thousands of variations and subcategories in specific dance forms. Just check out Salsa reveals many styles such as: New York style, Los Salsa, Puerto Salsa, Cali style, Cuba, Cumbia, Palladium and more. There are also many subcategories of martial arts in form. Focus on kung fu, there are tigers, cranes, snakes, monkeys, dragonflies, leopards and so on. In addition, dance and martial arts are open. I mean, styles have adapted, changed, and modified by the most skilled people of them over the years. Over the years, with the death of masters or the evolution and changes in technology, many kung fu styles have been lost. Also in Salsa, new evolutions have been created using new technologies and improvements in old technologies.
a contrast
Both artistic styles are expressive. In dance it is called choreography. The teacher builds a routine that effectively renders a particular style by zooming out. In martial arts, they are called forms. It has been inherited by former teachers for centuries [Kung Fu has existed for 1500 years], and forms are the practice of student practice to understand movements. They also appear in performances, showcases and tournaments.
Both art styles are social. In dance it is called social dance. There are usually two people dancing with leaders and followers; performing the actions they have been practicing. However, this is not an agreed routine, but a conversation. The leader provides the move for the follower and executes if the follower accepts. Leadership and follow-up require space awareness, restraint, and perfect execution. The most important thing is strong connections. In martial arts, it is called sparring. Leaders and followers often change during the round. More appropriate we can call it an attacker and defender. The aggressor leads the battle by proposing an attack that the defender must defeat. When the defender finds a window to show his chances, the defender will take advantage and become an aggressor; the role is reversed. Combatants must always focus on space awareness, restraint, improve execution, and establish good connections. This way of martial arts and dance observes the relationship between yin and yang. The leader proposes change, and the follower comforts it. Followers defend the defense by offsetting the person in charge to ease the pressure change.
How do we learn to dance and fight
Martial arts and dance focus on visual teaching through presentation and through it. In most cases, these actions are taught in a progressive part of the way, which means that the teacher starts with one action, then moves to the next, and so on. These actions are then strung together to complete the entire sequence. There are three possible variations in the anatomy of the proposed technique when teaching students.
First of all, continuous action is repeated. In Salsa, it will be the basis of convention. In martial arts, people often say that to become a master, you must master your own breathing. This is your source of strength and must be continuous.
Second, the sequential action consists of one step, then another step, then another step, and so on. In Salsa, this is best related to the movement of the hand when guiding the movement. Every move, such as a leader turn right, requires a certain number of steps. In martial arts, any move requires some steps; kicking after kicking requires, weight movement, pivoting movement, leg stretching, then leg compression, recovery posture, and weight redistribution.
Third, sporadic actions involve repetitive events separated by an indeterminate length of time. Cross Body Lead will be a good example of a sporadic event, because the entire dance can happen again without a specific period or recurrence rate. In martial arts, movements are performed at odd intervals to keep the opponent's defense.
Popular cultural connection
Do you know how the break dance evolved? Have you seen the old kung fu movies of the 70s or even earlier? Look at those actions; they are synonymous. Break dancers see these incredible movements subtly interpreted by kung fu practitioners and translated into dance. The purpose of the windmill is obviously different from the purpose of the break dance. Even today's shows such as "Dance with the Stars" and "Do you think you can dance?", many sports are not traditional styles, but bring some spices and flares to the dance. LA Style Salsa is notorious for its high-energy, acrobatic movements.
More intimate contact
We regard dance and martial arts as two things that have similarities. However, there is a more intimate relationship between the two, showing the fusion of art forms. Warrior countries such as the Zulu often use dance as a tool to strengthen their tribal pride. These dances are used to describe the power of the warriors and the desolation caused to their enemies. In Kung Fu, although the form itself can be considered a dance, lion dance is used for entertainment, but also trains students. Lion dances often appear in festivals and celebrations, and require a skilled practitioner to carry out ingenious advanced techniques. In the new world, before the emergence of B-Boys, there was Capoeira. Capoeira is the arrival of slaves in South America [ie Brazil] and is a dance martial art. The slaves do not allow any martial arts practice, but they subtly hide their training in the dance. Capoeira is unique in that it includes the training of musicians and further demonstrates the connection between dance and military practice.
Crossover and conversion
Many martial artists have crossed the dance and vice versa. The most famous martial artist/dancer, the penultimate person in the era of Kung Fu flowering, Bruce Lee became the Champion Champion in Hong Kong in 1958. Jenny Claude Van Damme is not a well-trained fighter, but actually learns ballet; this is proof of his art, because his kicks are very elegant but dangerous.
Dance and martial arts have a long history and are very close to each other. For martial artists, Salsa's movement exists in a very familiar world; elbows, twists, spins, kicks and throws [sometimes]. For Salcero, as their mastery becomes more powerful, the power and potential damage inherent in the action become clearer. As we have already shown, the facts embody similar characteristics that students can easily absorb. So if you are a dancer, you can take part in some martial arts classes. If you are a martial artist, you can take some dance lessons. Study similarities and develop your own style. But remember to keep fighting to the ring and dance on the floor.
