Numbness after surgery - How acupuncture is used to treat numbness after surgery

Many people have numbness after surgery, which may affect their quality of life.

Numbness can be a real problem because the part of the body feels like it is missing and a bit dead. Do everyday activities, such as taking a bath, know if it's too hot or too cold, or even wet, or someone can't do it when you touch you, because you have a numbness and don't feel part of yourself.

  • A 47-year-old woman had to remove most of her tongue because of cancer. The surgeon built a new tongue with the muscles of her forearm, but she left a serious numbness in that area. A large part of her inner arm left a scar and was completely numb. After five acupuncture treatments, the numbness gradually disappeared and she began to restore the feeling of the area. She is very grateful and says she is lucky to find acupuncture.
  • A 48-year-old male patient underwent surgical treatment of inguinal hernia and numbness in the groin area, resulting in decreased sexual function. After three acupuncture treatments, numbness has disappeared and his sexual ability has recovered.
  • The surgeon removed the tissue from the lower abdomen of a 46-year-old woman and reconstructed her two breasts after her bilateral mastectomy to treat cancer. This gives her abdomen a huge mucosal scar and is numb throughout the area. After eight acupuncture treatments, most of the numbness disappeared.
  • A 77-year-old woman underwent intense cosmetic surgery to numb several parts of her scalp. Three-needle acupuncture treatment stopped numbness.

Acupuncture is part of Chinese medicine and has existed for more than 1,000 years. In its history, millions of people around the world have received acupuncture treatment. The basis of acupuncture is that the body's energy flows along a specific channel, just as blood flows through the circulatory system. These energy pathways are called meridians, and their internal energy is thought to nourish and maintain the activity and health of the tissues they travel. Chinese medicine doctors believe that when a person undergoes surgery or tears due to an accident, the meridian is cut off and the energy flow is interrupted, resulting in numbness. Acupuncture can make normal energy flow, which can treat the cut meridians, restore normal feeling, and eliminate numbness.

Although medicine has not yet clarified how acupuncture works, today doctors often recommend acupuncture for patients with many different conditions, not just numbness after surgery. They do this because they have seen many patients with various diseases benefit from acupuncture treatment.

The people I describe are just a few of the many post-operative numbness cases I have treated over the decades. Has long been engaged in acupuncture, Oriental Medicine Doctor and Pain Management Center of San Pedro Peninsula Hospital.
