"Soft Like Me" is a strange movie from Canada. Although setting, clothing styles, etc. are recommended in the time frame of the 1930s, you are left with the impression that this film may also be a frustrating future. Although the movie looks simple, people will realize that many questions have not been answered after watching.
At the beginning of the movie, we saw a 13-year-old boy locked up on the porch in front of a small farm in the middle of a small wheat field. A man came to his hut and he was introduced to the warden. Obviously, Linus [Mark Ducusin] is now a prisoner on some kind of work farm. His crimes have never been revealed. The warden told him that as long as he followed the rules, everyone would enter the farm smoothly. If he doesn't... then... he will meet someone who is not as good as the watchman.
All boys on the farm cut wheat from sunrise to sunset and bundle it into a sheath. The boys only wear shorts, belts and wooden mouthpieces to prevent them from talking. During the day, harnesses are used to tie them to the pole by long ropes so that they cannot escape, and at night they are lifted by tension, causing them to sleep in a standing position, only their toes touching the ground.
Every night, one of the guards came to Jimmy [Jeff Thompson] and brought him back in the morning. He was taken to see the sometimes lonely prison director, and the other boys told Linus. On some nights, a boy is taken away and will never be seen again.
Although all the other boys have given up on escaping or being released, Linus still insists on the small piece of hope he buried. Is this something he should insist on, or what the other boys are saying: Hope to bring punishment?
The film was directed by Jeff Erbach, who also directed "The Nature of Nicholas."
