"International Car Free Day" was first born in France on September 22, 1998, when people in 35 French cities voluntarily refused to use private cars. On the same day a year later, 66 French cities and 92 Italian cities participated in the "Car Free Day" event. Then in 2000, "Car Free Day" was included in the EU Environmental Policy Framework. September 22 has become "European Car Free Day" and "International Car Free Day". Approximately 1,488 cities in the world participated in the event.
In the 21st century, more and more ordinary Chinese consumers are starting to own private cars. At the same time, however, traffic congestion and air pollution caused by private cars have begun to have a major impact on people's daily lives. Statistics show that in the early 21st century, emissions from automobiles accounted for 30% to 60% of total air pollution. As private cars increase, exhaust pollution will become more and more serious. Urban residents in every country will be the direct victims of car exhaust.
The car is known as the "city killer." In addition to traffic accidents, it also brings a lot of pollution to the air. The car emits a lot of harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, oxynitride, aldehydes and the like. The traffic pollution problem in China is very serious, and traffic congestion is destroying the core of Chinese cities. A well-known economist estimates that the annual loss caused by traffic congestion in Beijing is about 6 billion yuan, with an average of 1.1 yuan per person per day and 400 yuan a year.
The promotion of "Car Free Day" is to appeal to people to choose a bus, bicycle or walk when going out. Most importantly, this is a way of life for people to reflect on themselves. People always buy cars more convenient and faster. However, more private cars mean traffic jams on the road. Instead, people lose efficiency and speed.
The purpose of "World Car Free Day" is not to exclude all vehicles, but to draw attention to environmental issues. On September 22nd, let us return to freedom to walk and enjoy the joy of a quiet life.
