How to make a compass: two designs

This is a fun way to use the household items to explain the natural world. Follow these instructions to make a floating compass and a suspension compass to determine the wind direction.

Floating compass

material:

  • 1 transparent plastic cup

  • 1 magnet

  • Needle or spike

  • pin

  • Cork or a piece of foam about 1/4 inch thick, one quarter in size

  • Pencil or pen

  • Penwater

  • notebook

  • (optional) webcam or camera

program:

1. Wipe the end of the magnet along the needle

2. Make sure to rub about 30 times in the same direction

3. Pick up the pin to test the magnetization of the needle

4. Pass the needle through the cork or foam block

5. Add water to the cup

6. Place the cork and needle so that they are at the center of the cup

7. Wait for the needle to rest

8. The thick end of the needle points to the north

Hanging compass

material:

  • 1 transparent plastic cup

  • 1 magnet

  • Line - about six inches long

  • Needle or spike

  • pin

  • Pencil or pen

  • Notebook

  • (optional) webcam, camera

program:

1. Wipe the end of the magnet along the needle

2. Make sure to rub about 30 times in the same direction

3. Pick up the pin to test the magnetization of the needle

4. Attach one end of the line to the middle of the pen or pen

5. Attach the other end of the needle to the needle

6. Place the pencil on the edge of the cup

7. Make sure the needle does not touch the bottom of the cup

8. Wait for the needle to rest

5. The thick end of the needle points to the north

If you have a commercial compass, compare the results of your homemade compass. Is the reading different? Is one type of homemade compass better than the other? What happens when I move the compass to another location? How long does the needle hold magnetization? How do you know when you need to re-acupuncture?
