How to import products from China more successfully - Part 2 - Visit Chinese suppliers

I want to emphasize the importance of personally visiting Chinese suppliers. You may have heard that some consultants believe that they do not need to go to China at all. They advise customers to order samples and place orders based on sample evaluation results.

I strongly recommend that you do not do this and explain why. I have taught me more than 25 years of experience in importing goods from China.

Why are you traveling?

Of course, China has some very large manufacturers and quality assurance agencies to ensure that product quality is relatively consistent. With them, you can be more accommodating, but they may not be able to offer you the most competitive price because their organization costs are higher. They usually have distribution channels in your home country and are therefore less likely to buy from them.

You usually deal with small and medium-sized factories that require your explicit instructions, preferably in a face-to-face manner. One problem with intermediaries or agents is that they may have an understanding of the various products, but not necessarily enough experience in any product. Finally, there is no way to resolve the fact that the Chinese mentality tends to be in personal contact with overseas trading partners, and access to their factories is feasible.

Prepare for surprise

Small and medium-sized factories can usually provide you with the most competitive price, because you want to get the most profit through import, they may become your best partner.

By visiting your pre-selected factory, you can decide who to reach an agreement with after the negotiations.

You will face many surprises during your factory visit and you may need to modify your first judgment when communicating with certain factories. You will find that some factories are smaller than expected, and their own factories have limited production capacity. They don't want to miss your order and hire a subcontractor to produce for them.

This is completely unacceptable because these subcontractors are usually poor in quality management and don't care about your order because you are not their direct customer. If the factory has this policy, if you want to avoid trouble, don't work with them.

Import consultant

Another way to achieve great results is to hire a neutral company as your personal consultant. They gain the necessary understanding and knowledge to effectively deal with Chinese manufacturers and provide services at an affordable cost. Simply send your request to them and they will perform these requirements in the best possible way. You don't have to worry about inferior factories because they have a way to avoid them. You must ensure that they have no special relationship with any factory to ensure they comply with your instructions.
