As an immigrant from China to Australia, I am often asked the question: "How did you learn English?"
I speak English and Chinese very fluently. I can speak fluent Mandarin and some Chinese dialects, such as Cantonese and another dialect of my hometown.
People ask this question for different reasons. Some people are just out of curiosity. Some people try to prove how difficult or how easy it is to learn a foreign language, while others may want some skills on how to learn English.
This is a difficult question to answer. It really depends on your expectations for mastering the language. I may study hard like most Chinese people - in fact I am sure that most Chinese are still studying hard.
If you know how to do it, working hard will definitely pay off. I will talk about how I get rewards in the future. Now I want to introduce the difficult and easy ways to learn English.
Difficulties in learning English
In 2011, I went to China to visit my family. Since I came to Australia in 2006, I have visited my family once a year in China. My sister is a middle school teacher in China. Compared with some English teachers I know in China, she speaks English quite well. My sister teaches English. The traditional way is to teach English and other subjects in China. The purpose is to pass the exam.
One of my nephews just went to high school and he is about to go to high school. He is one of those students who have worked hard to score high on the English exam. My brother and his wife are eager to get some tips on how to learn English from me.
When I was at school, we started learning English in middle school. My teaching method is the same as my sister recently to her students, except that I did some extra work to stand on top of others. I started doing this unconsciously, and then I found out that this extra work made my English test scores from the highest point to the highest point, sometimes much higher than other grades. It was only then that I realized that it was really useful to me.
At school, every student in the same grade gets the same book for a semester, which is the book you need to study through the exam. The process will be: Throughout the semester, the teacher will focus on the book and learn over and over until the student has a good understanding of everything in the book, and then you can take the exam for the book. .
Since every question in the exam is related to this book, my extra job is to remember every word in the book until I can repeat the articles without reading the book. I am happy to share my secrets of success with others, but I obviously have the talent to remember things, because I can finish repeating an article in about half an hour, while others find it difficult to complete it. I have always used to repeat the article in the book until I finished high school. I was the pride of my English teacher throughout the middle school because the teacher valued the student's score.
If you want to pass the exam in China, this is the way you have to go. But in fact, when you really want to use what you've learned in a practical way, that is, when you're talking to a client in an English-speaking country, you'll find it very disappointing. After I graduated from college, I went to work for a company with overseas clients. I have experienced this situation.
I was in Guangzhou, China. We have customers from overseas to visit the Guangzhou trade fair twice a year. Sometimes I found a job to show around Guangzhou, it was a disaster - I had communicated with them via email, but I couldn't talk to them face to face. I just don't understand what they are saying. After ten years of studying English at school, I can't understand their English!
After 10 years of learning English at school, I can read and write, but I can't talk to people face to face. I realized that I need to do something. I am looking for an answer online. I found the answer after trying a few things.
The answer is to chat with people and learn how others are talking. You can choose those online chat rooms. In these chat rooms, you will meet people you have never seen before, and it is likely that you will never meet them in real life. In this way, you can avoid being embarrassed by the fact that you can't chat with people because you think your English is not good enough. It's that simple. If the person you are chatting loses interest because your English is not good enough, then go ahead. Another million people are interested in chatting.
After a few months, my English speaking skills improved significantly. Then I have enough confidence to call my client, I used to try to avoid it. I have tried to write an email. The day after I spoke to the customer over the phone, the sales manager said to me, "Hey, I haven't noticed that your English has improved a lot. What have you done?"
I smiled and said, "I have worked hard."
When I came to Australia in 2006, my English was enough to understand 60% of the conversation. After 3 months in Australia, I could understand most people's conversations.
About the hard way. I will now introduce the simple method.
Easy way to learn English
Empty your cup and learn like a child.
When my daughter came to Australia with me, she was three and a half years old and just arrived at the Phnom Penh Garden. She came here in December and started Jinde Garden in early February. My daughter has had an intimate garden experience in China, so she is happy to move on. On the first day, I went to her room and she couldn't talk to anyone. She can't speak English.
The teacher from Kinder Garden is very concerned about her English and gives me some advice on how to let her learn to speak English. They are very kind, they bought a few books and tried to learn a little Chinese so they could talk to her. Their process of learning Chinese did not go too far, because within three months, my daughter had said very well enough to let herself understand that in the other three months, she spoke English like other children.
How does my daughter learn English? watch TV.
One of the more kind garden moms suggested that I let my daughter take a look at Australia's popular children's TV show "Play School." It is twice a day, morning and afternoon. My daughter likes it very much and has seen it in almost every episode. She saw it from home, from behind the store where I worked and where she could find the show. I often hear new songs and nursery rhymes that she learned during the show.
Brett sometimes complains that she has watched too much TV. She will say, "I have to look at this. My teacher said so."
My daughter is now speaking English better than me, but I write English better than half of the people I know.
My efforts to learn English in 2011 finally paid off. In 2011 I started a course to get a full real estate license. After studying in our real estate office, it took me five months to complete most of the course's 24 modules, while Bret was an Australian native and studied 12 months full time on the RMIT campus. Learn to get a license in 2003 and 2004.
To sum up, here is a list of ways to learn English:
Step 1 - Watch the TV shows and movies you like and feel. This will improve your listening skills in a short time and then guide you to step 2;
Step 2 - Try talking to people and use as much English as possible, and over time, you will learn a lot from others.
Step 3 - Steps 1 and 2 will let you speak English well. If you study hard but if you want to read and write well, then you need to read a lot and practice writing a lot.
