Hangzhou Liuhe Tower (Liuhe Tower) - History and Information

Liuhe Tower or Liuhe Tower is a tall multi-storey tower in the south of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Located on the banks of the Qiantang River, at the foot of the Yuelun Mountain, this pagoda was built in 970 AD and was located in the Northern Song Dynasty but was destroyed during the war. Then it was rebuilt and ruined several times. The current wood and brick structure dates back to 1152.

As one of the most impressive masterpieces of ancient Chinese architecture, the Liuhe Pagoda attracts thousands of visitors every year. The 196.5-foot-tall pagoda has 13 floors and 7 floors. The six harmony refers to six directions [day, earth, east, west, north, south] and six aspects of Buddhism. A bright light mounted on the top can also be used as a lighthouse.

The pagoda was originally built by the rulers of the Wuyue country [now the region has become part of Zhejiang Province]. It is also believed that one of the reasons for the construction of the Liuhe Tower is to calm the tide of the Qiantang River and become a navigation aid. At night, the lighthouse is almost lit up everywhere, so that ships and boats on the Qiantang River can see the building and use it as a navigation tower. You can also see that there are 104 large iron bells on its cornices, because this is to protect against harmful spirits, which are responsible for the heavy tide that caused such a large flood before the dam was finally built.

Each story of the pagoda consists of four elements; interior walls, exterior walls, winding corridors and small rooms. This octagonal tower also has a spiral staircase leading to the top floor. Each of the seven ceilings is engraved with painted figures such as birds, flowers, animals and figures. When viewing the pagoda from the outside, it may appear to be bright on the upper surface but dark on the bottom. That is the harmonious exchange of light and shadow.

If you climb to the top of the pagoda, you can see the beautiful and impressive scenery of the Qiantang River Bridge, the healing tide across the Qiantang River. There is also an exhibition centre near the pagoda that shows many details of other important ancient pagodas in China, including all the information about its architectural style. That gallery is also known as the Pagoda Park.
