In virtue ethics, philosophers have concluded that gratitude is a necessary condition for all other virtues and a necessary tool for morale and well-being.

However, the philosophers of virtue ethics did not regard the application of gratitude as a reference or connection to the divine. On the other hand, Ingratitude is considered a deadly moral deficiency, a shame. The British philosopher Hume said that ungratefulness is the most terrible and unnatural act of all crimes human beings can commit.

The German philosopher Emmanuel Kant listed ungratefulness as one of the three vices of "the essence of evil and evil."
