After the Chinese official Cai Lun invented the paper in 105 AD, the art of paper-cutting appeared in the Han Dynasty in the 4th century. [1] The oldest surviving paper-cut is a symmetrical circle discovered during the 6th century. Xinjiang China. [2] [3] Paper-cutting in the Song Dynasty continued to be implemented as a popular form of decorative art. [3]

In the eighth or ninth century, paper-cut appeared in West Asia and Turkey in the 16th century. The knowledge of papermaking did not reach Europe until the 13th century, so paper cutting can only come after this. For example, in Switzerland and Germany, it was not until the 16th century that paper-cut art or scherenschnitte was established [see silhouette].
