Bamboo Craft - Flat Bamboo Weaving Technology

Natural, durable and attractive bamboo not only makes mats, baskets and other crafts, but also for high-end packaging, decorative panels, curtains and blinds. These weaving techniques can be divided into planar weave, size weave and hybrid weave. First of all, bamboo craftsmen must know the plane weaving technique of the bamboo craft.

Flat bamboo weave produces two-dimensional or flat products such as woven mats or carpets. It differs from the method of making three-dimensional products such as baskets, lampshades, and figurines. Prior to weaving, the bamboo stalks are machined as follows, making them easy to weave.

Bamboo processing

The green skin of the bamboo stalk is removed by scraping off its green surface with the help of a blade. Apply a uniform force along the surface of the stalk to ensure evenly colored bamboo.

The upper edge of the stalk portion is flat to facilitate peeling. Use a sharp knife to evenly cut around the edges. The stalk portion is divided into strips of equal width. The number of slivers depends on the diameter of the stalk. Cut carefully from the edge down along the length of the stalk. The slivers are then completely separated to form a separate sheet.

Stripes are striped into a fine layer. The blade and blade are horizontally held at the upper 1/3 of the cross-section of the noodle. The first cut is made by clamping the blade into the sliver. The blade is then placed 0.5 to 1 mm from the first layer. After repeating the number of times required for the process, the layers were peeled off. The thickness of the layer depends on the desired woven product requirements.

Divide the layer into thin strips by using both hands. The strips can be lighter or darker to each other. They are arranged accordingly.

The bamboo strips are then dyed and bleached with the help of various materials such as dyes, sulfur, hydrogen peroxide or other chemicals. Methods such as dipping, boiling, washing, air drying, etc. are used for this purpose.

Plane weaving of bamboo

Before continuing the process of bamboo plane weaving, novice bamboo weavers need to understand two basic terms. The two terms are - Warp and Weft. Warpage is a set of parallel bamboo strips that provide the basis for planar weaving. They are placed longitudinally on the workbench or work area. The weft yarn is a bamboo strip inserted laterally below and above the warp yarn for design.

The basic technique of flat bamboo weaving is to weave the dots into a pattern. It involves two colors of bamboo - one light and the other black - along the warp and weft of the bamboo strip. The color intensity and contrast in the pattern is created by varying the density of dots woven below and above the warp.
