Acid reflux treatment - acupoints, acupressure and acupuncture

Scientists at the University of Adelaide, Australia, studied by applying a slight electrical pulse to stimulate acupuncture points on the wrist called the Neiguan or Pericardium 6-P6. This acupressure point is associated with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as acid reflux. Acupoint stimulation solves the reduction in lower esophageal sphincter relaxation - LES. Relaxation of LES is known to be a major cause of acid reflux syndrome. Acupoint stimulation reduced transient esophageal sphincter relaxation - TLESRs were significantly reduced by 40% from 6 per hour to 2 per hour. This reduction was also noted to be significantly higher than the results in the placebo group, in which members were only subjected to simulated stimulation at the hip.

Shiatsu massage is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that applies pressure to the same acupuncture points by hand, just like inserting a needle during acupuncture treatment. Electric acupoint stimulation is a high-tech version of traditional acupuncture therapy. By exerting pressure on the acupuncture points specified in ancient Chinese charts, specific areas and organs of the body can effectively treat diseases using the energy of the meridian system called yin. In this process, Yang and Qi are aligned, allowing the body to heal itself.

The acupoint stimulation used in the above study is a modern version of ancient Chinese surgery where needles are used instead of electrodes that transmit small electrical pulses to specific acupuncture points on the skin. According to Chinese medicine, these points are related to the internal pathways that conduct energy through the body. Through the stimulation of these points, a healthy energy flow is achieved.

You can also apply pressure to the P6 by hand. Acupuncture points are usually located between and between the bones, tendons and ligaments. However, they do not exist on bones, blood vessels or arteries, but rather in depressions inside or between them. For many years, acupressure for P6 has been used to treat vomiting, nausea, motion sickness, seasickness, morning sickness, and postoperative nausea. This traditional Chinese medicine is also used to treat insomnia, fever, epilepsy, chest pain and migraine. The shiatsu wristband, also known as the "kelp", is now being used for this purpose. The shiatsu wrist strap is designed to fit the wrist and has a small plastic button that pressurizes to apply pressure to the P6. It is widely believed that these acupressure wristbands may help reduce acid reflux.
