10 evocative erotic Shunga Woodblock Prints

Shunga, literally means "the image of spring", is a generic term used to describe Japanese erotic prints, books, scrolls and paintings.

As a distributor of Japanese woodblock prints and shunga, I have encountered many eye-catching and evocative designs. The following 10 shunga designs appeal to me and there is no typical order. I read these prints in books, auctions and private collections.

Kappa Rape - Utamaro
This design is the first print of Utamaro's excellence. Uta-makura [pillow poem] - The series was published in 1788 and depicts a complex scene Awabi [Abalone] diver sees two Kappa [Underwater monster] beats a colleague underwater. This handsome rape scene is actually a fantasy that a woman imagines a violent encounter. Tightly curled [the Japanese show high sex exclusion] indicates that this is not a rape scene. Lesbian couples - Eiri
Magnificent from Eiri Calligraphy model In 1801, an exciting female-female love scene was published, in which one woman [young man] was dressed Harigata [artificial penis] and holds a sea shell containing a certain lubricant. Chinese couple - Shigenobu
Shigenobu's extraordinary and extreme scene Willow storm -eries [late 1820s] merged with a Chinese couple. The man whose curly hair is on his shaved head is extracting liquid from the woman's vagina. In his book Sex and floating world According to Timon Screech, Keisai Eisen wrote that these fluids were used as aphrodisiacs and applied to the male genitals before sexual intercourse. Western couple - Shigenobu
The same wonderful from Shigenobu Willow storm - Depicting a couple of Westerners. This design is so unique and striking that Western influences mimic the shadow effect of Western copper etching. Western men are portrayed as a demon like a character. [Illustration in Japanese erotic fantasy - C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel, p. 177, Ill. 65c]

Tea House - Utamaro
The most popular oban [large format] print from the shunga of Utamaro's masterpiece Pillow poem - Depicting a series of two lovers in a private room in the teahouse. High-quality printing techniques, elegant smooth lines, composition and segmented details, such as the transparency of the clothes, make it the most coveted print. This is a male lover whispering Abnan-E [non-explicit print] is actually Utamaro himself. [Illustrations in Japanese erotic fantasy - C. Uhlenbeck and M. Winkel, p. 130, Ill. 39]

Farmer girl - Qingyong
清修' S Sleeve reel [Sode no maki] -series[c.1785] is another highlight of the shunga genre, with a unique landscape hashira-E [Pillar printing] size prints. Dutch - Eiri
An amazing depiction of the Dutch captain interacts with a beautiful prostitute. They [through the audience] watch through the windows of the Nagasaki brothel. On the small table behind them, the incense burned on the boat. This specific detail is about a lot of shunga designs that portray this theme, and it is said that the use of prostitutes burns incense to drive away the smell of their Western customers. The Dutch long nails are also a striking detail. Dutch women are not allowed to live in Nagasaki, but Japanese prostitutes are allowed to enter these compounds. Eiri' S Calligraphy model Inspired by Utamaro Pillow poem It also includes a couple of Dutch couples. [Complete ukiyo-e Shunga - R. Lane, Volume 24]

Depicts an abalone diver who was abandoned in the ecstasy embrace of two octopuses. For a long time, collectors and scholars thought this infinitely fascinating scene was a rape scene, but Danielle Talerico rejected this and he found that the Edo audience would have this image and the legendary Tamatori . In addition, the text in the figure indicates mutual satisfaction between all participating protagonists. [Illustrations on countless books and countless websites]
