Just recently, we installed a new cable device at home, and I have been busy training all new channels. Like all other modern people, I simply look through the channel guide to find something worth watching.
Then, when I met the classic detective series Magnum P.I. in the 1980s.
In this episode, Magnum struggled with some rogues, and one of his pairs pulled out the nunchaku and quickly defeated Magnum's partner.
As a smart guy, Magnum is not in a hurry to enter. Instead, he picked up an ashtray and used a can to block many of the blows on the weapon, and then eventually slammed the attacker unconscious.
For eight seasons, Tom Selek played private investigator Thomas Magnum, a naval college graduate, a former seal and a Vietnamese veteran. Magnum lives in the beautiful estate of Tom Clancy, just like the writer Robin.
In exchange for the free living rent of the estate and the use of Robbins' red Ferrari 308 GTB, Magnum and the former British Army Sergeant Major's British Jonathan Quayle Higgins III deal with safety issues.
If working in the manor and receiving huge subsidies is not enough to keep Magnum busy, he has done a lot of other investigations and has to deal with more mundane tasks such as drug dealers, killers, terrorists, spies, and even divorce cases. I can't think of a private investigator or navy I have ever seen. He is not a fan of this show.
It's worth noting that although Magnum may perform fantastic adventures every week, the melee skills he uses in almost every episode are real-world self-defense. Looking back at the program Magnum clearly demonstrated his military martial arts background. After all, Magnum deals with a variety of attackers ranging from martial arts weapons to bottles, bats, and of course firearms.
Magnum learned his martial arts while the army was still using Charles Nielsen and B.J. Cosneck for the very effective World War II combat of the Navy and Marine Corps. These people teach martial arts for battlefields and street battles rather than sports.
But Magnum is not the only one who shows melee ability. Higgins is a veteran with more than 20 years of military service and is familiar with countless martial arts, although he obviously relies on the self-defense method taught by Colonel William E. Fairbairn. Magnum's partners Rick and T.C. also showed how many times they had fought with Magnum during the Marine Corps.
Magnum is a member of SEAL Team One, which operates in Da Nang, Vietnam, and serves under the direction of the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency during the war [Magnum and his partners can often see wearing Da Nang baseball caps]. Magnum did not learn to fight in close combat at a beautiful and clean martial arts school, but in the streets of Da Nang and the jungles of northern Vietnam. Magnum has never wasted time getting into position or trying to do specific actions. Instead, when he saw the threat and was attacked. If he has the advantage of a gun or other weapon, he will use them.
During his wartime service, Magnum and his friends fled an enemy prison camp and had to hunt down the pursuers with bare hands. In a case of finding a kidnapped friend, Magnum had to fight a successful martial artist from Japan. Although his opponent threw many powerful kicks, Magnum continued to attack until another man fell.
Although Magnum is a fictional character, there are still many lessons to learn from him. He and his partners are proud patriots who never regret their service in Vietnam and understand the real dangers of the cold war and terrorism. They are also not complacent. Magnum and all his partners use motion to maintain their functional strength. Higgins even participated in the Cambodian rescue mission with the boys and is still suitable for action.
In Hawaii, there are many martial arts taught to eager students, but the style of its most famous fictional residents is still the best. On an island where the environment is diverse, you must be able to adapt to every possible state of self-defense. You can't limit your ability to protect yourself. The clever writer of the TV show is clearly aware of this and keeps Magnum using his military fighters instead of joining the karate and ninja fanatics of the time.
