5 important tips for studying Kung Fu in China

Since 2007, I have visited Kung Fu Schools across the country and have met with a variety of masters and students in the process. Some people come to martial arts, some are adventurous, some are healthy and fitness, and some just create space for changing bad habits of the past. The reasons people seek this experience are diverse. But what they should have in common is the desire to improve themselves. To this end, anyone considering this experience should pay attention to training and experience other experiences.

So here are five important tips for getting the most out of your training at Kung Fu School.

My first 5 tips

1. In order to meet the growing needs of Westerners who want to learn traditional kung fu, more and more schools are emerging across China. Make decisions cautiously, not just based on your school choices and styles, but also on what you want to achieve and gain experience. The school now offers more than just martial arts. They often offer additional courses in Chinese, Buddhism and Chinese medicine. These are great, giving you the opportunity to soak your toes in the water so you can learn further.

2. The importance of your classmates in Kung Fu School should not be underestimated. These students will be the ones you will learn and must live with.

3. Be realistic. There have been times when I received inquiries from students who were so ridiculous or wanted to start their own school after just six months to one year of study.

4. Be prepared for cultural shocks and different ways of thinking, or in some cases completely lack of thinking. Remember, this can also be part of the enjoyment. You are not in Kansas, so don't expect it to be the same or complain about it often. We have all experienced this situation, and sometimes there is a love-hate relationship with the place we visit. When you grab yourself to do this stop! If it continues to just go home. Don't bring bad people or negative emotions to people around you, or disturb your classmates to train or enjoy. Be patient, polite and self-aware.

5. Remember, because someone wears kung fu shoes, kungfu clothes, or some rosary, this does not mean they are a good master or martial artist.
