George Washington counterfeits are common, but it is almost always possible to recognize diligent and experienced document inspectors. In the process of forging Washington letters and documents, several people became quite famous. Most notably, counterfeiters like Joseph Cosey and Robert Spring have been notorious for their handwriting and signature in Washington.
Joseph Cosey likes to deceive autographed dealers and sell them letters and documents allegedly signed by Washington and many other famous Americans. Cosey is a forged master craftsman who often uses plain paper and iron-based inks, which are commonly used in the late 18th century.
Cosey's fabrication involves forging a payroll signed by Aaron Burr and George Washington in the same document. The letters made by Cosey handwritten by Washington from Washington during the Revolutionary War may be difficult to discern from real examples.
Perhaps Cosey's most brazen forgery is the complete draft declaration of independence of Thomas Jefferson's mock hand. Cosey's forged Declaration of Independence was sold in 1969 as a counterfeit for $425.00. Cosey's imitation is amazing because it seems to be a real draft.
Robert Spring is also known as one of the best forgers of Washington handwriting and signatures. Although spring forged the signatures of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones and Horatio Nelson, he was known for his fabricated Washington letters and documents.
The irony is that Cosey and Spring's counterfeits are inherently collectible. Their value has soared over the years. The Washington-signed Revolutionary War Pass, forged by Robert Spring, was sold to Philadelphia Signature Dealers for $15 in the 1860s; it is now worth more than $1,000.
Robert Spring's handwritten counterfeit for selling Washington cheques for $10 in 1863 is now priced at more than $1,200. This book from
